Post HomeTour Home Tour: And We're Walking, Walk...

There is no walking, walking in my house, only walking. It's not that big. But it makes it oh, so easy to maintain. While I love looking at the large houses I see online with lots of frou-frou, honestly, the first question is that pops in my brain: "Who is gonna dust that?" It's all beautiful, but I am a low-maintenance girl. I also can't stand The 3 Stooges because when they start throwing those pies around, I'm thinking, "And who will clean that up?" Just a little stroll through my psyche.

The sum total of my fall decor!

So I got a little highjacked from the Home Tour with my sewing for the Airstream, which is coming along nicely, thank you.

So, now we are in the hallway. The infamous border conceived to cover up the infamous drywall boo-boo. Fact is, the border now looks like it's always been there and I can't remember what the wall looked like before.

Watercolor by my friend Mark Johnson.
He and wife Bobbie are both talented artists.

And in this corner...the wall behind the kitchen-cabinet-turned-media-center-server-cabinet, used to be brown clay and it was just too much brown. So it became white and it was another excellent choice as it really brightened up the room. And yes, that is clay paint.

Then behind the sofa, I changed up the sofa table. The lamps (as old as the hills, from Target originally, but that's not where I got them) used to be in my bedroom and of course they used to be some other color. The white "legs" were on the wall behind the wood stove but but they just weren't happening there. So, now they're here.

Much better

And the sofa table itself used to be a coffee table. It had been used in our previous home but had no place here and was actually in the wood pile. I needed a very narrow sofa table, the top being the only part that would be visible. So I picked up a black aquarium stand for $3 at a church sale, cut down the coffee table top and attached it to the stand. Just what I needed!

Okey-dokey, it's 08:29 and my sewing machine is calling.  Later...

Inspiration

This print, a gift from a friend, hangs on a wall in my bathroom. If the door is open I can see it from the bed and it always makes me happy. The Elysian Grove is an old neighborhood in downtown Tucson and this building was the market for the neighborhood. It fell into disrepair for many years and then was rehabbed into a funky bed and breakfast and now it seems to be an artist's studio. It was a great place for a girl's weekend.

This is the cabinet that needed inspiration. On clearance at WalMart for less than $20. Just the thing to take the place of the rickety, ugly wicker shelf that we had in place while waiting for something better to come along.

I loved the weathered but still vibrant blue of the doors in the print so...

And then to make me smile when I open the cabinet a beautiful handmade paisley print paper for the inside.

Now to find some fabulous door pulls.

Here's a Little Project

I did this quite a while back but didn't get around to posting it. For Christmas a couple of years ago we purchased a media center as a family gift. The media center would allow us to have our music, movies and internet all available on the flat screen on the wall. It actually worked out well and it gives me more ammunition daily to get rid of the CABLE TV! Most things we watch are available online in some form at some time (we aren't the family who waits anxiously for the next episode of Lost or Survivor).

What with episodes of shows like 30 Rock (love), The Daily Sh
ow, and Colbert posted by the networks and sites like Hulu who needs cable? And Netflix now has on demand movies, not the latest but you can find some interesting films you might not watch otherwise. Yesterday the boys and I watched Sophie Scholl, something we didn't specifically seek out but was worth watching.

But, I digress
.

The downside: all this electronic goodness was grotesque looking sitting there on the floor. Initially I hid it in a big basket/hamper but that still was not doing it for me.. What I needed was a cabinet and the space it had to fit into was about right for a kitchen wall cabinet. So I was on the hunt and finally found what I needed at the Habistore. An old, beat up, painted white kitchen cabinet. With a new paint job, a top surface and some legs, it would be perfect. What do you think?

This is the marble finish I did on the top surface. It's just a piece of MDF we had laying around. The cabinet also has little wooden legs (which probably cost more than the cabinet) and I glued a piece of trim around the bottom to give it a little more substance.

It looks great and suits its purpose reasonably. I may eventually move it to the bedroom and get a wider cabinet for the media center. In order to insert DVDS/CDs we have to open the door and angle the MC, as the drawer does not have enough room to open.

That just means more painting fun for me!
